The '08 Conventions: A 50 State Strategy

The Democrats have picked Denver, Colo., as the host city for their 2008 nominating convention, a reward perhaps for the gains Dems have made in that state. Democrats now control both chambers of the state house as well as the governor's mansion; an achievement to be sure for a state that's gone Republican in every presidential contest but one since 1968 (Clinton in 1992).

The Republicans similarly will party it up in a state that hasn't always tilted their way: Minneapolis/St. Paul. In the past, voters in the land of a thousand lakes cast their electors for Dukakis, Mondale and Carter. The last Republican that won the state was Richard Nixon in 1972.
