Sen. Purgason to Lead Medicaid Reform Hearings

Sen. Chuck Purgason (R-Caulfield) has been named chair of a new committee that will focus on creating the new system to replace Medicaid.

Senate President Michael Gibbons named Purgason to the key slot today.

The Senate Committee on Health and Mental Health will lead hearings on Medicaid reform and hear legislation aimed at putting a stop to tragedies uncovered in Missouri's mental health system.

“We want to make healthcare available and affordable for all Missourians,” Gibbons said. “We are also committed to protecting the safety and quality of life of our most vulnerable citizens.”

Gibbons will serve on the five member committee. He named Sen. Chuck Purgason, R-Caulfield, as Chairman. Senate Majority Floor Leader Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph, will serve as Vice-Chair. Sen. Harry Kennedy, D-St. Louis, and Sen. Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence, round out the committee.

Gibbons said he chose Purgason to chair the committee because of his commitment to creating a new healthcare delivery system as well as his experience with Medicaid legislation and the budget process.

“This committee will play a very important part in shaping the new HealthNet program in the state of Missouri,” Purgason said. “I look forward to chairing this committee and working to better suit the healthcare needs of Missouri’s population.”

The committee is expected to begin hearings in the coming weeks.
