Clinton Raises $1 Million for McCaskill as Talent Goes Door-to-Door in the Ozarks

Former President Clinton roused a St. Louis crowd and raised more than a million dollars for Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Claire McCaskill Saturday, as Sen. Jim Talent hit the pavement to go door-to-door in the Ozarks.

Here's the AP story on Clinton's big visit.

The key graph in the piece:

"Clinton predicted McCaskill would prevail in the Senate race if she has enough money to compete and stop the Republicans from transforming her from a "three-dimensional human being into a two-dimensional cartoon. "You've got a choice," he said. "You can vote to perpetuate the control of the narrow strip of Republicans or for a proud successor to Harry Truman."

Meanwhile, Sen. Talent stopped in three Ozarks towns today to meet with supporters and go door-to-door. His stops included Springfield, Sarcoxie and Joplin. This was a bit of a different type of campaign swing because Talent made impromptu stops at local stores, donut shops and fire stations in the area. Spokesman Rich Chrismer tells me the junior Senator knocked on about 50 doors here in Springfield.

It's interesting that Clinton would refer to Harry Truman. If Truman were alive today he would be chased out of the party by the Deaniacs and moveon crowd. This is not your moma's democratic party.

Truman would never have put up with the scare tactics, political spin and political leaks of strategic information that have characterized this administration.

Truman was known for being willing to tell voters where he stands on issues unlike Talent who won't state a position if polls tell him he is out of touch as with the minimum wage issue. Or tries to change positions when politically favorable as with stem cell research.

Truman was old-school Democrat. Todays' bunch can be just as nasty and power-hungry as todays' Republicans. In their own ways, they both do the same things, and have the same goal: A huge, expensive, nosy nanny-state.

No thanks. I'll pass.
