Too Many Errors

We caught New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson on "Meet the Press" Sunday morning. Our assessment: he's not ready for prime time.

Aside from stumbling through his positions on assault weapons and Supreme Court justices, his biggest blunders came on the baseball field. For years, Richardson's resume included a mention of being drafted by a Major League Baseball team. With Russert pressing, Richardson described a story that wouldn't sound like you were drafted in any sense.

Then there's the Red Sox/Yankees issue. Richardson declared himself a Boston Red Sox fan. Well and good and obvious posturing for Red Sox Nation in New Hampshire. Except in his book, Richardson declared himself a Yankees fan. Russert pressed and Richardson hemmed and hawed through a convoluted explanation that brought the Associated Press and Mickey Mantle into it.

Bill, Governor, keep your day job.

I caught most of Richardson on MTP. I think Russert posed some really tough questions, some handled better than other by Richardson. He did botch the Supreme Court question and appeared to want it both ways on energy. Still, a rough performance notwithstanding, I think he'll carve a niche in the primaries. He could do well in an early primary state like Iowa. Speaking as a Republican, I believe Richardson has the most varied resume and is the most centrist candidate on that side. So, while I concur that it was a rough performance, I do not agree that he's not ready for prime time. I think he'll do fine in the long run, although he will not get the nomination.

I noticed the same issue in the 1st Dem Debate. He needs to stick to his guns and not play "Hilary and Edwards" where he says what he thinks is popular int he moment.
