Gov. Blunt Mum on Tax Cut until SOTS

Governor Matt Blunt won't bite . . . on what type of tax cut he'll support in 2007.

He's making us overly anxious politicos wait until the State of the State.

"One of the priorities is tax reform that leads to some net reduction in the tax burden," Blunt said at a Springfield press conference today. "Unlikely that I'll be more specific about that before the State of the State."

Asked if he'd support Speaker Rod Jetton's proposal to eliminate taxes on social security benefits, Blunt was coy.

"I'm very interested in it, I've spoken with Speaker Jetton about it. I think it's one of those ideas, in terms of tax relief that's out there for us to consider," Blunt said.

Interested, but not on board just yet.

Democratic House Minority Leader Jeff Harris is convinced that the Republican-House, Senate and Governor aren't all on board for the same tax cut plan.

"I hear this from the Speaker of the House and I'm not sure the same sentiment is shared on behalf . . . by the Speakers colleagues on the Senate side, as well as the Governor's office," Harris said. "The Speaker talked about an additional $300 to $500 million in the budget. They're have been some Republican Senators that have expressed, or may be in disagreement, or a belief that that money may not be there. So I'm not sure his Senate colleagues will whole-heartedly support that initiative," Harris added.
