Over the last two days, I sought out military families and veterans of the Iraq war to gather their opinions about the troop escalation the President announced tonight.
Overall, most of the families I spoke to support the increase in troops. Some soldiers I spoke with said the increase was "welcome, but late." Others said it will only make a difference if they are prepared to stay 8 to 10 years. And one father said we needed to stay in Iraq because he still believed Saddam Hussein was partly responsible for September 11th.
Two of the those families were featured in my piece on Wednesday night's KY3 News @ 10.
Norman Trowbridge of Mountain Grove has a son who has served two terms in Iraq. Although his son Corporal Rick Trowbridge doesn't want another term in Iraq, Norman believes a troop surge is the only available option left to attain victory.
Paul Schmitz almost lost his son in the town of Mosul in August of 2004. Paul Schmitz was shot in the spine and told he was lucky to be walking, let alone alive. Now three years later, Schmitz says he and his son agree that a troop surge in Iraq is too late to be helpful.
