Why I'm Away

I'm in Des Moines, Iowa for the first three days of this week to attend a Poynter Institute conference on covering the 2008 Presidential Nominating Contest.

So while I'll be away from the hour-by-hour flow of Missouri politics, I plan to share what I'm learning here with you.

The conference, which is being hosted by The Drake University School of Journalism, is bringing together political journalists from around the country from print, television and radio to learn and debate how the media should cover the 2008 political process.

Tonight, Tom Rosenstiel, the director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism, will moderate a panel about what citizens need to learn from the media in order to participate in the electoral process.

Panelists will include former Bush pollster Matthew Dowd, Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack and Des Moines Register Editor Carolyn Washburn.

The next 3 days will focus on such topics as covering debates, polling and campaign fundraising. It will focus on how technology is changing political journalism and how to deal with our own inherent biases as journalists.

I apologize from being away from the daily rough and tumble in the big Mo. But hopefully what I take away from this conference will be well worth the time.
