Blunt: It's the Borders, Stupid.

Rep. Roy Blunt said that any federal immigration legislation should focus on a plan to secure the borders without offers of amnesty.

As the U.S. Senate began tackling a new immigration policy, Rep. Blunt released a statement today that touts a bill passed by the House last year.

“The clear delineation of a national border, coupled with a general willingness to enforce it, is the most basic requirement of a sovereign nation. As Congress looks to renew the debate on immigration, it must first put forward a serious plan to secure our borders without offering amnesty to those who continue to enter this country illegally," Blunt said in a statement.

What has the House leadership said about the U.S. Senate bill?

House Minority Leader John Boehner is withholding judgement.

"Well, until we see -- until we see what the Senate is going to do with this, it's premature for us to make comment, that there's an outline there but it hasn't gone over the Senate floor. There's been an agreement between the House and Senate leaders and the White House that the Senate would go first. And so until the Senate brings a bill off of their floor, I think it would be wise for all of us to withhold judgment," said Boehner in a press conference last week.

In the article you linked, Boehner also is quoted as saying:

"Securing our borders and stopping the flood of illegal immigration into the United States must be the first priority of this Congress,..."

Boehner said he had "significant concerns about parts of the Senate proposal - particularly provisions that would reward illegal immigrants who have consistently broken our laws."

So, when you quote him as saying, "...so until the Senate brings a bill off of their floor, I think it would be wise for all of us to withhold judgment," we should also be made aware that he's not exactly been silent on the topic either.

Minority Leader Boehner is quoted in a story published by the Drudge Report as saying the immigration bill is a "piece of s*#t bill."

Kudos to Boehner and Blunt for standing up for what is right regarding the security of this country.
