President George W. Bush arrived at the Springfield-Branson Airport at 6:55 p.m. Thursday night.
That's 15 minutes early. Give him this much. W. knows how to be on time.
Bush emerged from Air Force One wearing a dark coat, blue shirt and no tie. Political guru Karl Rove was the second one off the plane following the President.
Bush met briefly with a small group of supporters, shook a couple hands, waved to the media and then took off in the Presidential motorcade to his hotel in downtown Springfield. The presidential press pool is here too. And get this? Word has it, some of the political correspondents aren't allowed to stay at the same hotel as the President. Hmmm, wonder why?
Either way, Bush gets his Zzzzs in Springfield, then holds a rally for Sen. Jim Talent's re-election Friday morning. Bush is scheduled to speak at 9:20 a.m. Despite protracted whining from Democrats, KY3 News will air Bush's speech live. Ky3's Cara Connelly and I will have complete coverage beginning at 8 a.m., through the speech and in KY3 News @ Noon, 5 & 6. Ky3's Steve Grant will anchor the coverage and then interview Greene County Democratic chair Craig Hosmer for a response.
Expect the President to talk tough on taxes, terrorism, judicial activism and possibly even bring up good ole John Kerry again. I'm also expecting him to use his line about how the media have predicted the defeat of the Republicans before. Remember Bush in 2004? The movers never showed up at the White House, he'll say.
Overall impact on the U.S. Senate race? Debatable.
Either way, the President is in Springfield and it's an exciting political environment to be in.
Should be fun.
See you in the morning!
