UPDATE: Sometime Saturday, the Denison campaign modified its language. You can see the change below:
Rep. Charlie Denison is claiming the endorsement of the University of Missouri on his campaign website today.
The campaign posting says the university is backing Denison because of his "work on higher education in our state."
Publicly funded institutions and entities are prohibited by law from endorsing a candidate or ballot issue.
This is not the first time Denison has stirred controversy over campaign contributions and endorsements. Denison had previously claimed on a political fundraising invitation that Missouri State University and Springfield Public Schools had endorsed him. He later called it a campaign staff mistake.
The Southwest Missouri Business Development Fund has issued a press release, lambasting Denison for this latest move. "Representative Charlie Denison continues his string of false claims about his short-lived political career," says Chris Ray of the development fund.
The SWMO Development Fund has endorsed Denison's opponent, David Dunn, in this Tuesday's primary.
