U.S. House candidate calls lawsuit brought by opponent's wife as
'desperate'
WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican congressional candidate Alan Conner says a lawsuit brought against him by the wife of one of his opponents is a "desperate" measure.
Conner is competing in the primary election against former state senator Jim Noland in Missouri's Fourth Congressional District in west-central Missouri. Noland's wife has sued Conner, claiming he left a threatening message on her answering machine.
Janice Noland says Conner said -- quote -- "I will bring you down."
The lawsuit filed last month seeks damages for harassment and emotional distress.
Conner says his corporate counsel is handling the lawsuit and declines to comment on specifics.
He says: "Desperate people do desperate things and people can file a lawsuit against whoever they want."
