Giuliani & McCain Pull Out of Ames

DES MOINES -- I'm sitting in the airport in Des Moines and there's a quiet frenzy among the political press corps about the decisions of Rudy Giuliani and John McCain to pull out of the G.O.P. Straw poll here in August.

Usually, the straw poll is a critical test for a candidate's strength and organization. And apparently, it's a heck of a lot of fun for junkies.

But Giuliani said he wasn't going to compete, and then later McCain followed suit.

The Politico has already called the event in Ames irrelevant.

"The decision of two of the top three current candidates in the race to skip Ames effectively renders it irrelevant. It also deprives the Romney campaign of what was probably going to be a nice, buzz-inducing victory. He'll likely still win, of course, but there is not as much bounce to be had in a victory-by-forfeit," writes The Politico.

But could a win by a second-tier candidate help elevate that person?

This just means Governor Romney will win in June rather than August. It's interesting to note that the other two camps made this decision one week after a poll comes out showing Romney with a 12% lead.

How can you skip the straw poll and then compete in the caucuses- and win? You can't.
