Huckabee to the Left, Hillary to the Right?

Check out this piece from the Arkansas News Bureau, which examines Mike Huckabee's "liberal" side and Hillary Clinton's "conservative" leanings . . .

At a recent breakfast, Huckabee said people aren't doing as well as broad economic indicators imply, it's ridiculous to say God belongs to any type of political thought and that candidates without foreign policy experience can succeed in foreign affairs as president.

Self-serving? Or genuine?

Huckabee's comments on the economy are particularly interesting. Contrary to what some have said, he's trying his own brand of conservatism with a populist streak. When you analyze each school of thought, conservatism and populism have much in common: both believe that the strength of the country lies in its people (not its government), and both schools are historically mistrusting of large portions of power invested in government. That being said, populism advocated the redistribution of wealth which diverges from conservative thought.

Still, Huckabee has said many times that he's a "Main Street Republican". This is his own brand of Jacksonianism, which some Republican presidents like Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan have successfully adopted.

My feeling is that this is what Huckabee really believes and it's part of his appeal.

Genuine or not, it's a bit of fresh air. There is still a midddle in this country. I'm a born again Christian and a democrat and I refuse to be put in any box. Tell me what I don't want to hear, tell me that everything is not okay, tell me that you don't have all the answers then tell me that there is a middle between right and left where we can work together to make things better. Tell me that because I still believe.
