U.S. Sen.-elect Claire McCaskill was in the committee room today to hear Secretary of Defense nominee Robert Gates say the United States is not winning the war in Iraq.
McCaskill, who will become a member of the Armed Services Committee conducting the Gates confirmation hearings, decided to sit in on the hearings today.
Spokeswoman Adrianne Marsh said McCaskill would be inclined to support Gates, and was encouraged by much of his testimony. "She would also like to see how the rest of the confirmation hearings play out before making any definite decision either way," Marsh said.
"She noted that he mentioned the need for change in his opening remarks and it took almost two hours before he mentioned the words cut and run. She thought he displayed a desire to be independent and that was encouraging," Marsh added.
McCaskill is also in Washington today to have a meeting with Comptroller David Walker, who heads the Government Accountability Office.
The Senator-elect is also finalizing her choices for her top staff. Marsh said McCaskill could decide on her Chief of Staff by as soon as tomorrow.
