Candidates TARGET Votes at Barbeque

WATCH MY KY3 NEWS @ 10 REPORT ABOVE

T.A.R.G.E.T is the annual Greene County Republican Barbeque Fundraiser Held at Phelps Grove Park. T.A.R.G.E.T stands for The Association of Republicans Getting Everyone Together. Some G.O.P. attendees said they were surprised to see a lower turnout at this year's event.

Kenny Hulshof and Sarah Steelman both addressed the crowd, but Hulshof's speech was notable for its aggressiveness at a party insider gala. While Steelman basically stuck to her issues and talked about herself, Hulshof made a clear point at offering a contrast between himself and Steelman. Usually at these types of party booster events, the candidates never mention their opponents to avoid offending party activists who don't like to witness a inter-party fight up close. But while Hulshof didn't overtly criticize Steelman, he strongly pitched why he'd be a stronger nominee than her. WATCH BELOW.

Greene County Sheriff candidate Mark Webb will start running TV ads on the local stations next week.

Republican Mark Webb: "If I'm the Sheriff today, and those are my officers out there, I'm going to start looking for ways to take corrective action, and maybe provide training."
Republican Jim Arnott: Deputies acted "appropriately . . . did the right thing."
Republican Gene Thomlinson: "I didn't see that the officer did anything wrong in what he did. This was a situation where the officer was using his best judgment I think."
Democrat Mike Ramon: "She did what she needed to do to protect herself from her state of mind. The officers did what they needed to do to protect themselves . . . I think this is a happy ending."

It's The Prosecutor vs. The Sheriff as Moore Backs Webb

Greene County Prosecutor Darrell Moore tells the KY3 Political Notebook he's endorsing Mark Webb for County Sheriff in 2008. The announcement today pits prosecutor Moore against the current Sheriff in the race to replace Jack Merritt next year.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Merritt is the treasurer for the campaign of Chief Deputy Jim Arnott. But Moore says many will be surprised at the competitive campaign former police officer Mark Webb will wage against Arnott in the Republican primary.

I featured the Arnott vs. Webb match-up in the context of a larger story about crime statistics on Tuesday's KY3 News @ 10.

"I told Jim it was nothing personal," Moore said in an interview today. "I just think Mark would do the better job. I know him from back in high school, he interned for me and I think he offers a new perspective on it all," he added.
