The View From Charleston

I was out of pocket this weekend in Charleston, South Carolina.

Home of the first critical southern primary.

And home of the USS Yorktown, where John Kerry launched his 2004 campaign.

By the way -- who won Sunday's Republican debate? And whatta ya make of the new ABC News poll in Iowa that puts Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee at 8%?

I heard that pollster Frank Luntz did a focus group around the GOP debate in Iowa on Sunday and most of the group thought Huckabee won the debate. If he finishes 2nd in the straw poll, he could very well be a "sleeper" pick in every sense of the word.

Also, Real Clear Politics polled GOP county chairs in Iowa with the question of who would win the straw poll. Not surprisingly, Romney finished first. Interestingly, Tom Tancredo finished second.

My bet is on Huckabee to finish second.

Re: The Sunday debate...

-- Rep. Ron Paul has the wrong letter after this name. The biggest pops of the morning were for his "pull out now" remarks.

-- George let Mitt Romney off the hook too early on the Brownback ad. Ok, Mitt, we get it, you're pro-life.. that still doesn't negate the facts of the Brownback ad.

-- I thought Rep. Tom Tancredo positioned himself well as THE conservative candidate. He was the only voice I heard calling for a philosophical return to smaller government. It's as if the other candidates have conceded that government is getting bigger and will continue to do so, particularly in the realm of healthcare. So why fight it?

-- If Mike Huckabee had a bigger national profile, I think he'd be doing much better. He's always got the best articulated quips and unlike Romney, comes across as having always believed what he believes and is sincere in those beliefs. He'd be a solid #2.

-- It was funny watching the candidates run for the door on the question about the President's 2nd inaugural philosophy of spreading democracy throughout the world.

-- Kudos to Tommy Thompson for still being in this thing, but his commitment to the stump got old fast.

-- Dittos, but to a lesser degree for Senator John McCain. There's no fire there. You can look in his eyes and see the disappointment that he knows he let this one get away.

-- What was up with the cutaways of Mrs. Romney?

IMHO, no one stole the show. I didn't see the President of the United States up there.

Sam Brownback is throwing "haymakers" at Romney because he can't gain any traction otherwise. I don't see how Brownback can survive lower than a second place showing in the Straw Poll in Ames. He's a neighbor and has invested heavily in Iowa. If he finishes third or below, he's gone.
