Through last night, two Democratic state Senators lead a filibuster to block a bill that would authorize the sale of assets from the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA).
By this morning, the Missouri Republican party called it a "Bob Holden flashback."
"The current political stonewalling is eerily similar to Democrat Holden’s decision earlier this decade to withhold more than $100 million in education funding because responsible Republican lawmakers refused to pass Draconian Democrat tax increases on hard-working Missourians," blasted a release from the Mo. G.O.P.
Sens. Chuck Graham and Wes Shoemyer lead the filibuster through the night.
Jason Rosenbaum at the CDT Politics Blog, (God Bless him!), covered it all. (A tip of the hat to him for staying up to explain it to us.)
The G.O.P. couldn't resist taking another shot at Attorney General Jay Nixon during this battle over higher education funding.
“It is a complete and utter disgrace that Democrats would choose to hold hostage thousands of Missouri students who will benefit from the Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative in order to satisfy Jay Nixon’s partisan political obsession with becoming governor,” said Paul Sloca, communications director for the Missouri Republican Party. “Nixon has fought against this bold plan from day one to try and prevent Governor Blunt from enacting his vision for world-class higher education in our state and it is shameful that he is using his pawns in the Senate to stonewall for his political gain.”
