Russert: Dems Need Missouri

Tim Russert was on NBC's Today Show this morning talking about what else . . . the Missouri Senate race. MSNBC is out with new polls in all the battleground U.S. Senate races today, including one in Missouri showing Claire McCaskill ahead of Sen. Jim Talent 46-43%.

Watch the VIDEO here.

Missouri Republicans have only lost one seat in the past 25 years, but Russert believes the Democrats have a shot at making that two.

"If the Democrats win the 4 seats I talked about (Rhode Island, Ohio, Montana, Pennsylvania), they need to win Missouri, they need a net of 6," Russert told Matt Lauer. "The Democrat is ahead today in Missouri, they think they have a shot."

Lauer asked Russert if the Missouri race was a referendum on President Bush.

"Someone who he has campaigned with regularly, he now barely mentions his name," Russert said.

Of the other three races in play - Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri - the conventional wisdom among politicos is that Missouri is the best shot at a Democratic pick-up. In Virginia, the momentum seems to now be behind Sen. George Allen and Republican Bob Corker now leads Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee.
