Nixon Will Return Money

It didn't take long. It was probably always more of a matter of when than if.

The Associated Press is reporting that Attorney General Jay Nixon will return more than $19,000 in donations to his campaign for Governor that came from Ameren Corp., the company he is investigating over the Taum Sauk reservoir collapse.

Nixon's people say returning the dough doesn't mean it was wrong to accept in the first place, but rather a move to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest. Even so, the AP reports that the state's natural resource chief still doesn't trust Nixon to handle the investigation.

Money quote from the piece: "I just don't trust him," said DNR chief Doyle Childers. "I don't see anything that's changed except he's got his hand caught in the cookie jar. At first he said there's no cookie jar. And now he said, 'I'll put all the cookies back.'"

Just one more example of one of the golden rules in the political arena:

In politics, perception IS reality.

Good job David- One of the more enteraining things about politics is watching the rats scurry when someone turns on the light.

I still think we'll get to see Jay Nixon making the perp walk before it's all said and done. If he's the best the dems have in 2008 they're toast!

Anon, I wouldnt go that far. Politicians on both sides of the isle suck up money like a carp feeds on algie.

What Nixon did was not exactly cool, but it is the old addage of nothing throwing stones in glass houses.

Boyd, you are da man.

If the media thinks Jay was right to return the Ameren money (and I do) why doens't the media get on Blunt to return the fee agent money and the ethanol money, the virtual school money, the Altria money and the Sallie Mae money?
In each instance huge sums of money was given to the campaigns of Blunt and Republican Senators (often through party committees). All that happened here was Nixon was trying to raise money the Republican way.

If there's this much slime going on in Missouri politics, we need to get Doug Harpool back in office.
