The Associated Press turned up big donations from Ameren Corp. to Missouri Attorney General and Democratic candidate for governor Jay Nixon.
Between January and March, Ameren gave four Democratic committees $5,000 each. Those committees gave the Nixon campaign a total of $19,000.
Ameren says it gives to candidates on both sides of the aisle. Nixon says the contributions won't affect his efforts to pursue a lawsuit against Ameren over the collapse of the Taum Sauk Reservoir in December.
This quote caught our attention:
Attorney Art Martin of University City is treasurer of two of the committees, the 24th Senatorial Democratic Committee and the 73rd District Democratic Legislative Committee. He said he received both checks in the mail unsolicited and decided to give the money to Nixon's campaign instead of local candidates because the governor's race is the most important in the state.
Did we miss something or is there a Democrat running for U.S. Senate this year?

It's called a "quid pro quo" which is common language in Nixon's office.
Can party committees donate to federal candidates ie McCaskill like they can to state candidates? That might be why they made the donation to Nixon, if it turns out that they couldn't donate to Claire.
It would be illegal for a committee to use funds from corporate contributions to contribute to a Federal Candidate like US Senate because corporations are not allowed to make contributions to Federal candidates.
