Missouri State University president Michael Nietzel is resigning.
He won't depart until December 2010, but the announcement surprised the school's Board of Governors and faculty. It comes at a time when Missouri State is struggling with a bleak budget picture and is considering furloughs and early retirements.

Board of Governors member Gordon Elliot said Nietzel assured the board he wasn't leaving to pursue another University post.
Board of Governors member Mary Sheid tells Ky3 News Nietzel's wife is battling throat cancer and that she's "completed treatment."
"She's had extensive treatment and I don't think all her problems are completely resolved at this point," Sheid said. "I just think the culmination of trying to balance everything did take its toll."
