Rep. Harris Requests Ferrell Inquiry

The State House Democratic leader sent a letter to Speaker Rod Jetton today requesting a special House committee investigate the sexual harassment case surrounding ousted Department of Agriculture Director Fred Ferrell.

Rep. Jeff Harris said the "nine-month cover up, outraged many Missourians."

"As a result, it is vital for the Missouri House of Representatives to make a strong statement that sexual harassment will not be tolerated in state government. To ensure a full public airing of the matter, I respectfully request that you immediately establish a House Special Committee on Sexual Harassment to both look into this particular incident and thoroughly review state policies and statutes pertaining to sexual harassment," Harris wrote to Jetton.

Harris wants to know if the department retaliated against the victim, and how the department proposed to pay for the rejected settlement.

"Why did the attempted settlement check come directly from the department instead of through the state’s Legal Defense Fund, as is standard practice?," Harris questioned.
