McCaskill's "No Amnesty" Pledge

Sen. Jim Talent attacked Claire McCaskill repeatedly for supporting "amnesty for illegal immigrants," during the 2006 campaign.

McCaskill repeatedly fired back that she would never support amnesty. She ran an ad saying, "Let me tell you what I believe in . . . No amnesty for illegal immigrants."

Now as McCaskill heads to the U.S. Senate, she may face piercing pressure and a difficult choice on the touchy topic of immigration policy.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

"Democrats presented a largely united front on immigration this year, providing crucial support for a measure that would have allowed illegal immigrants to gain citizenship -- a bill critics attacked as "amnesty." But as the party prepares to take power on Capitol Hill in January, tensions are surfacing over this provision and other aspects of the complex debate."

"Although Democratic leaders insist that rewriting immigration law is a priority, they acknowledge that building consensus on how to do that will be tricky. They must deal with competing camps within the party and address concerns raised by core constituencies -- hurdles that could block passage of a final bill. "

"McCaskill and a slew of incoming House Democrats took stands that, in the shorthand of campaign rhetoric, seemed more conservative on immigration issues than the positions staked out by the party's congressional stalwarts."

If an immigration bill comes to the floor, it will surely be an early test for McCaskill, on whether she decides to compromise with Democratic leaders and what she defines as amnesty.

Please consider adding some space for local elections. Many times it can be as or more important who is in charge of local government---as it is who is in the White House. Even though the President sets the tone---Local issues can touch more lives.

No matter what thanks for keeping your site up and going!

I was Certified by City Council---Steven Reed for City Council

REED HAS ISSUES
1. Steven Reed has worked on a Community effort to establish a Technology Park to bring more opportunities and better jobs to the people of Springfield and southwest Missouri. At present the City, (through City Utilities), and County are putting money into the Second Industrial Park. Reed believes that since the second Industrial Park is mainly empty the best solution is to change the NAME AND CONCEPT of it to a TECHNOLOGY PARK. For more information please see www.technlogypark2006.org

2. Steven Reed spent over 12 years PROMOTING AND GATHERING SUPPORT ACROSS THE STATE FOR Rail Passenger Service from St. Louis to Springfield and Branson. This summer MODOT the state transportation department made all the statewide news saying they are working to get funding for AMTRAK to service these and other cities. Reed believes the City of Springfield needs to pass a PROCLAMATION SUPPORTING SUCH AN EFFORT AND TO SET ASIDE $100,000 to locate a location for a TRAIN STATION in Springfield. It is a safety issue by getting some traffic off I-44 and also bringing BUSINESS and Commerce to the likely downtown area of Springfield.

3. The Audit will use the concept of Managerial Accounting to find what areas are going well for the City but mainly locating areas they can cut cost and better serve the people of the City. Reed will ask the State Auditor Office to hold a public meeting and allow a number for people to call with possible issues the citizens want to be looked at. The City should work in a positive way to reap the most benefits possible from the process.

4. Steven Reed wants to see more People get involved in running for City Council and more Citizen Involvement in general issues concerning the Citizens.

5. Steven Reed recently attended the founding meeting of the Oak Grove Neighborhood Association. Reed lives in the area and wants to help promote and get people involved in the new organization. Reed says the area is one of the safest crime free areas in Springfield and he wants to keep it that way.

6. Reed wants an Ordinance that will require all motorcycles in Springfield to have mufflers.

7. Reed wants an Ordinance that prohibits the use of Cell Phones by the driver of autos and moving vehicles.
