The White House has been trying to woo Sen. Claire McCaskill on extending its popular "Cash for Clunkers" program, POLITICO reports.
It's part of a behind-the-scenes effort to eliminate defections on a bill that would add an additional $2 billion dollars to the program that's almost broke.
"The White House has also been trying to woo Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who initially was unconvinced about an extension and said she opposed new spending for it. But she has said she may support the program if the money used was already appropriated for the stimulus. McCaskill said she wants to “see the numbers and how they’re going to cut it off," reports POLITICO.
*McCaskill has said she is undecided on how she'll vote*
"Cash for Clunkers" gives consumers up to $4,500 to trade in gas guzzlers for more-fuel-efficient vehicles.
