Bond just wants to maintan his supposed position as "leader" of the party. He's afraid if Stellman wins, he will lose that mantle. In all honesty, he probably should lose his influence. He hasn't been much of a party leader recently, caring more about "bi-partisanship" than about Republican ideas.
I respect Kit Bond immensely, but ask Rudy Giuliani how Sen. Bond's endorsement worked for him.
