Gov. Matt Blunt said Monday he wants a state law that would bar Missouri from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Using the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D headquarters as a backdrop at a news conference on Monday morning, Blunt said the state already has safeguards intended to prevent illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses.
He says Missouri lacks a specific law against it, however.
New York's governor recently proposed giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants but he ended up withdrawing that plan in the face of opposition and ridicule.
Blunt also wants to make it illegal for anyone to help an illegal immigrant get a Missouri driver’s license. He hasn’t said what penalty he would propose for that new crime.
