The Case For Giuliani

I have to write this post in response to both my Democratic and Republican friends in the newsroom and across the country that keep telling me Rudy Giuliani can't win the Republican nomination for President in 2008.

It's not that Rudy's a slam dunk. He's got lots of problems. The attacks (many personal) will ensue --- his wives, why he's not on good terms with his son, the post-9-11 business deals, Bernard Kerik--- That doesn't even get to abortion, gays and guns!

He'll experience a drop in the polls at some point. He'll be attacked, hit from the hard right and left. But there's just too much evidence out there for me not to call him the frontrunner right now.

I know polls are just polls. And 11 months is a long time. But in politics, polling is the only evidence we have to go on. And they panned out pretty well in 2006.

So I present you the following . . . my case for Rudy's electability.

  • Among likely primary voters in Alabama (not exactly across the bridge from Manhattan), Rudy leads McCain 28%-23%. Remember, that's ALABAMA!
  • In the early primary state of South Carolina, 55% of those polled say they have a favorable opinion of Rudy. (And his rating was much better among Republicans.)
  • In New Hampshire, Rudy leads McCain by 10 points, with 37% of G.O.P. support.
  • Could Rudy put California in play for the G.O.P in a general? Yes siree. He leads McCain 41%-23% in Cali.
  • And howabout Jersey (my home state, so hold the jokes!). Fuggetaboutit. Rudy in a landslide -- 58% to 15% over McCain.
  • Not convinced Rudy can win in the south? To the Peach State we go, where Giuliani leads the field with 28%.
  • What about the industrial Midwest? Rudy leads with 26% in Wisconsin. Cheeseheads will learn how to say Giuliani. Bet on it.

So am I just delusional or can Rudy really win this thing?

You are not delusional. I am an Evangelical, pro-life Christian and he's my 1st choice at this stage of the game. There are several reasons for this: 1) I will pick ANYBODY over McCain 2) Because there is a lack of good, solid conservatives to pick from 3) The War on Terror is the most important issue to me right now and I think Rudy would be stellar on it.

Also, even though I am troubled about his pro-choice stance and his marriage issues the fact that he would pick strict constructionist judges allays a lot of my fears in that area. And since Rudy is the most honest and real candidate I believe what he says over flip-floppers like McCain and Romney.

So in my opinion you are not delusional, its a real possibility.

I'd have to agree with pbbut. I am an Evangelical Republican, and it is frustrating when people are willing to give up their values and vote for someone completely against what they stand for.

Not only do I disagree with Giuliani's stance on many issues, such as abortion, I am very saddened by his stance on gun control issues as well.
