How many people do you know with full-time jobs work around 3 days a week with several months off during the year?
Congress gets away with it. But according to incoming Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, those days are over. Hoyer says members should expect longer hours than they are accustomed to when they return to work in January.
Next year, members of the House will be expected in the Capitol for votes each week by 6:30 p.m. Monday and will finish their business about 2 p.m. Friday, according to this Washington Post article.
Hoyer says the new 5-day work week is meant to repair the image of a "Do-Nothing Congress." Some Republicans say this just shows that Democrats care less about spending time with their families and people in their districts.
Minority Whip Roy Blunt, on the other hand, says bring it on.
"They've got a lot more freshmen then we do," Blunt said of the Democrats. "That schedule will make it incredibly difficult for those freshmen to establish themselves in their districts. So we're all for it."
