JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri judge is expected to rule today on a lawsuit by supporters of a tobacco tax hike trying to get the measure on the November ballot.
Cole County Circuit Judge Tom Brown heard arguments last Friday.
Secretary of State Robin Carnahan disqualified the proposal from the ballot last month, saying it fell 274 signatures short.
The ballot proposal would ask voters to raise the state's 17-cents-a-pack cigarette tax to 97 cents. It would also increase taxes on other tobacco products to 30% of the manufacturer's
invoice price, instead of the current 10%.
Projected proceeds of at least $350 million annually would go toward health care and anti-tobacco programs.
