ST. LOUIS - Missouri is doing a poorer job overseeing private nursing homes than it was three years ago, according to an audit released Thursday by state Auditor Claire McCaskill, according to the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, Sen. Jim Talent's campaign took the opportunity to blame McCaskill for the oversight problems.
"The facts are clear. When Claire McCaskill ran for State Auditor in 1998 she said, 'I'll stop the payments of all state funds to any nursing home that allows elderly abuse.' McCaskill broke that promise by not stopping payments to nursing homes where abuse occurred, so what she says 53 days before an election is not credible," Talent campaign spokesman Rich Chrismer said. "The voters will hold McCaskill accountable for endangering the lives of Missouri seniors in nursing homes for nearly eight years as State Auditor."
