Missouri State Preparing For $5.5 M Cut in 2011

"A Bottom Line We Can't Ignore"

Missouri State University President Michael Nietzel is asking faculty and staff to consider early retirements and voluntary furloughs in anticipation of a $5.5 million dollar budget cut next year.

Nietzel held a townhall meeting on campus Wednesday to discuss cost-cutting measures with employees and students. With federal stimulus dollars running out and state general revenue on a double-digit decline, Nietzel said the university must prepare for "a bottom line we can't ignore."

Nietzel said he'd like to have some decisions made by January. Nietzel said cutting $5.5 million dollars now is necessary to head off steeper cuts in 2012.
