Sen. Claire McCaskill announced $1.4 million dollars in federal housing grants for Springfield this week.
According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the money will be used to expand the supply of affordable housing to low-income families and minority households.
“Housing initiatives like these will help put the American dream of owning a home within reach for many Missouri families,” McCaskill’s spokeswoman Adrianne Marsh said.
In a press release, McCaskill's press shop made a point to note that grants are different than earmarks. "Senator McCaskill believes that federal grants and loans are a positive alternative to earmarks, which have in the past been authorized during a secretive process with little accountability. Federal grants and low-interest government loans bring federal assistance to Missouri in an honest and fiscally responsible manner," reads the McCaskill release.
