Giuliani Outraises Romney

Rudy Giuliani raised $17 million dollars during the second quarter fundraising period, and has $18 million cash on hand, according to a press release out by his campaign.

Mitt Romney is reporting $20 million dollars for the second quarter -- but here's the catch. He loaned himself $6.5 million, according to The Politico. That means he raised $14 million dollars, and now has $12 million dollars to spend.

The shape of the Republican field becomes more intriguing each day.

There's two metrics at this stage of the pre-primaries: money and polls. Both give reason for Romney to be encouraged.

Firstly, the decision for Romney to personally loan his campaign money is to show his donors that he's willing to part with his own money. He still raised a very respectable 14 million and broadened his donor base over the first quarter.

Secondly, spending that money has allowed him to rise in the other meric field: polls. He's up in New Hampshire and Iowa- so much so in Iowa that both Rudy and McCain have chosen to opt out of the Ames Straw Poll in August.

Make no mistake about it, Romney's star is rising. This is why in part that opponents are trying to tar and feather him over his religious beliefs. Let's be honest: is the "Mormon question" really a question if the candidate doesn't have the first shot at winning? Remember Orrin Hatch in 2000? Remember any hit pieces on his Mormon faith? No? The reason is that wasn't even on the radar screen in the polls. Romney is different.
