Springfield City Councilman Doug Burlison told the Springfield Minutemen tonight that he would introduce a city ordinance that would financially penalize employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.Watch my KY3 News @ 10 report HERE.
The newly elected Libertarian made his comments at a meeting of the Springfield Minutemen Tuesday night, a group that has been lobbying local and state officials for more action on the illegal immigration issue.
Burlison's proposal is still a rough draft, and is subject to change. But he wants to impose stiff fines on businesses -- a sort of sliding scale that gets tougher with the number of violations.
Here is Burlison's proposal:
- 1st offense - $500 fine per illegal employee
- 2nd offense - $1000 fine per illegal employee
- 3rd offense - Revoke city business license
Burlison said he wasn't sure where other councilmembers stood on the issue.
"We're not here because we're anti-Hispanic," Burlison told the crowd. But he did say that existing laws already in place are part of the problem.
Burlison said the federal government should work to expedite the process to become a legal citizen in this country. He urged the Minutemen to advocate that position. He said that would help a perception problem the group has, and help "eliminate a racist stigma."
Burlison also talked about pushing the federal government to reform its welfare policies, to reduce incentives for immigrants to grab "Uncle Sam's free goodies."
In his most controversial comment of the night, Burlison said part of the problem with the immigration issue, was the United States' "War on Drugs."
"One of the problems contributing is the war on drugs," Burlison said.
But the question always comes down to enforcement. Who would be responsible for cracking down? Under Burlison's ordinance, it would be Springfield police.
He said he realizes the manpower problem in the department, but is also drafting plans to address that issue. He said that federal grants are available for training local police officers to deal with illegal immigrants.
Fresh from a city budget meeting, Burlison said there's already talk about "infusing more money into the (police) pension system." He said he supports a plan to cover the cost of educating a police officer in exchange for that officer agreeing to a reduced salary for a period of 5 years. If the officer left before that, he or she would be required to pay the money back.
Burlison also said he was very irritated to hear that Greene County Sheriff Jack Merritt "allowed illegals to go free" during a recent DWI checkpoint. "If I was driving and in that condition, they'd find room for me," Burlison told the crowd, referring to the overcrowded county jail.

I'm glad Springfield has finally bought some fresh thinking to the counsel. The normal so called "leaders" are people who have demostrated that they can sit thru endless meetings without falling asleep. Doug will definitely spice up the conversation.
It's sad that some look at the Minutemen as a "vigilante" organization. It's a shame that some call the phrase "illegal alien" a racist pairing of words. It's confusing to read or hear people equate "anti-illegal immigration" with xenophobia and bigotry.
If folks from other countries want to come here, the least they can do is check in at the front desk and sign the guestbook.
And if anyone thinks WE'RE tough on illegals... do some research and find out how Mexico deals with illegals sneaking into their country.
Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.
The Netherlands and Belgium are more crowded than Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.
Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to "assimilate," i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.
What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?
How long would it take anyone to realize I'm not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?
And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn't object to this?
