U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill appeared on FOX News with Neil Cavuto to talk about the ongoing issue of veterans care and the continuing fallout from the Walter Reed scandal.
McCaskill is calling for the resignation of Army Surgeon General Kevin Kiley (pictured.)
"He is the Army surgeon general. He is responsible for the culture of command in -- in -- at Walter Reed. He was there for two years. I, frankly, was really encouraged that Gates got rid of Harvey on Friday, because Harvey had decided to put Kiley back at Walter Reed. And I I -- I am looking forward to see action taken in regards to General Kiley, also. We have got to have some accountability. If we all just stand around and wring our hands and say, support the troops, and no one is held accountable, then nothing is going to change," McCaskill told Cavuto.
McCaskill visited Walter Reed last week and says a soldier told her he was "scared to death about getting a job when he got out of there."
" . . .And then the brass told me about this great job program they had. Well, clearly, this young man knew nothing of it, and he had been there over a year. So, you have got to talk to the soldiers, and you have got to look at all of the facility," McCaskill said.
In order to boost the Veterans budget, McCaskill said she wants to be a Don Quixote when it comes to spending.
"A lot of this is accountability. As I said to -- to several of the witnesses that have come in front of the committees I serve on, who lost their job? You know, who -- who was held accountable when this building, a temporary building, was built, and it was 230,000 square feet? Who -- who is in charge of -- of losing their job when they don`t competitively bid something that should be competitively bid? It's that accountability piece that is missing," she said.
