WSJ/Zogby: Talent 50% McCaskill 47%

With 18 days to go, Republican Sen. Jim Talent leads Democratic challenger Claire McCaskill by 3 points, according to the latest Zogby poll published by the Wall Street Journal.

Talent 50%
McCaskill 47%

The poll is significant because Sen. Talent has finally reached the magical 50% mark he will need to retain his seat in November. Still, his 3% lead is within the 3.1% +/- margin of error. In this poll, Talent holds a nine point lead over McCaskill among independents, but Zogby notes that the presence of a Libertarian on the ticket may drain some votes from the Republican.

This poll was taken between Oct. 10 - Oct. 16. It is notable that the majority of the poll was taken before our KY3 debate and the final debate in Kansas City.

Based strictly on Zogby's results, the Republicans would retain control of the U.S. Senate if the election was held today.
