Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia Center for Politics was asked about the nation's hot U.S. Senate races Tuesday on CNBC.
On Missouri?
Mr. SABATO: Missouri is dead-even. I give a tiny edge to Jim Talent, but only a tiny edge. It may disappear.
Then later, MSNBC's Chris Matthews talked Senate races with The Hotline's Chuck Todd.
Matthews called the Missouri race "an election that looks like it's tilting Democratic, to McCaskill."
Asked if he agreed, Chuck Todd offered this:
"I'm not there yet. In 02, we all wrote Jean Carnahan off this time in October. It looked like Jim Talent had gotten a grip on this state. Missouri is a state that is trending slightly Republican and yet she made a huge run at the end and turnout made it a 50-50 race. That was like, I think the second closest Senate race in the country in 02 after that South Dakota race. I'll tell you if that's the way the turnout model works for Democrats in Missouri, then yeah, ok, McCaskill's going to win. But Talent, unlike Santorum, unlike Conrad Burns, has not had a fireable offense. There's no character flaw in Talent that all these other vulnerable Senate Republicans seem to have. I wonder if that helps Talent survive."
