On this Labor Day, more Americans have a favorable opinion of the retail mega-giant Walmart than of labor unions, according to a new Rasmussen poll.
58% have a favorable opinion of labor unions. 69% have a favorable opinion of Walmart.
Just 22% say Labor Day is one of the most important holidays of the year. 38% say they take the day to celebrate the contributions of society’s labor force and 45% say they use the day to mark the unofficial end of summer. 16% aren’t sure what they celebrate on Labor Day.
Labor Day parades aren't much of a priority for Americans. Just 12% of respondents say they'll include a parade in their weekend festivities.
That's not good news for local Democrats. Most will be participating in Monday's Labor Day parade beginning at 2 p.m. U.S. Senate candidate Claire McCaskill will be in town as well as Auditor candidate Susan Montee. They will join many local legislative candidates in the parade and at the Springfield Labor Council picnic at 4 p.m.
But the headliner of the day will be former U.S. Senator and vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. Edwards is slated to speak at the Labor Council picnic at Fassnight Park.
But the potential 2008 presidential candidate will begin his day speaking at an AFL-CIO breakfast in New Hampshire. He will then fly to Hampton, Illinois for a 1:30 Labor Rally. Hopefully, he'll get to Springfield on time for his 4 p.m. speech, but the spread is against it.

There's a Wal-Mart in Republic.
Across the street is a new Lowe's; next door to it, Meek's. Also across the street: Orschelin's. Down the highway: Price Cutter, Walgreen's, Dollar General, and Fred's.
All doing well, thank you very much.
I know, because I live in this town, and there are no "going out of business" signs on any non-Wal Mart businesses here.
BTW, I'm no paid shill for ANYONE, but I am taking requests. (sarcasm off)
"...7 Walton’s are in the top 15 of the wealthiest Americans..."
The top 1 percent pay 37% of taxes.
The top 5 percent pay over 60%.
The bottom 50 percent pay... less than four percent.
I wonder if the Kennedys, Gores, and Kerrys, are telling their accountants to not use loopholes and tax shelters...
In other words: If you're going to hate rich people... hate ALL of them.
Here's the problem:
Wal-Mart started out as a small business, then grew into a huge corporation.
Solution:
Don't let companies grow to evil corporate level. Problem solved!
