Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Massachusetts, will be in Springfield July 7 stumping for Rep. Roy Blunt. Romney chose not to run for re-election in his home state so he may spend his time laying the groundwork nationwide for a presidential run in 2008. In the last week, he's been to Utah (where he ran the 2002 Winter Olympics), Michigan, California, and Arizona.
Romney still lacks the name recognition of candidates like Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani. Charlie Cook sized up the field recently, including mention of a poll that puts Romney third behind those two. A recent Gallup poll puts him in the same company as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Sen. Bill First, R-Tennessee.
Romney joins Mark Warner, John Edwards and Sam Brownback as White House hopefuls making southwest Missouri a part of their travel schedule.
Who's next?
