McCaskill visits Springfield Thursday; Immigration focus of visit

Claire McCaskill will be in Springfield Thursday to talk about immigration. Both she and Sen. Jim Talent have talked about borders, guards and amnesty during campaign stops before.

We were curious what someone could learn from the candidates' web sites:

McCaskill makes immigration the final piece on the national security section of her issues section. She devotes all of five sentences to the issue on the site; four of them criticize the Bush administration. The only insight we get into her position is this:
Claire wants our laws to be enforced, our borders protected, and employers held accountable for hiring illegal immigrants.

McCaskill also has a separate section dealing with immigration exclusively. More Anti-Bush rhetoric and these two action statements:
Claire does not believe we need any new guest worker programs undermining American workers.
Claire will fight to make sure our states have the resources they need and she intends to hold Washington accountable for its failures to secure our borders.

Talent, on the other hand, puts immigration at the top of his list of issues. He explicitly says he does not support amnesty. He also mentions a bill he introduced to "protect us from terrorist attacks, undocumented immigration and the importation of illegal drugs such as methamphetamine."

Actually, Claire has an extensive immigration section and plan on her website: http://www.claireonline.com/issues/immigration.jsp

Her web site also includes a statement on the issue, in which she states quite clearly: "I oppose amnesty. As a former prosecutor, I believe people who break the law should be held accountable, both illegal immigrants and the employers who exploit them for cheap labor. The President, Senator Talent and the Republican Congress have stood by and done nothing for five years, refusing to prosecute thousands of employers who are blatantly breaking the law. The real solution to the immigration crisis in this country is strengthening border security and holding employers accountable ..."
